Events & attractions in Calvinia
The town of Calvinia offers a wide variety of events, attractions and things to do. From bird watching, a visit to the Akkerendam Nature Reserve, and playing a round of golf at Calvinia Golf Club, to simply taking in the beautiful views of the Hantam Mountains, Calvinia is a great place to visit for families, couples, and solo travellers alike.
Calvinia Museum
The Calvinia Museum is housed in the old Jewish Synagogue built in 1920. You will find items related to sheep farming and the lifestyle of the early European settlers exhibited in the Calvinia Museum. It also houses the Calvinia Tourism Office which arranges local walks and activities.
Calvinia NG Kerk
Die Ou Lady guest house is situated right opposite the Dutch Reformed Church / Calvinia NG Kerk, now a national monument. The neo-gothic style church was built in 1899, the second church to have been built in Calvinia.
Giant Post Box
It has been described as, “the mother of all post boxes” and became the hottest most photographed attraction in Calvinia. It was originally an old water tank that was converted into a post pox in 1995 and could very well be the biggest post box in the world.
Calvinia-Hantam flower route
The Calvinia region in the Hantam Karoo is famous for its flower season around September (depending on Mother Nature). The colourful flowers decorating the countryside is spectacular. Up to date maps will direct you to the best shows.
Hiking & 4x4 Routes
The heart of the Hantam offers various hiking trails, including through the two nearby nature reserves: Akkerdam Nature Reserve and Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve. There are also various 4×4 trails for the 4×4 enthusiast to take while exploring the beauty of the fascinating Karoo
Calvinia Hantam Vleisfees
This two day meat festival takes place annually in Calvinia, the heart of the Hantam. Calvinia is famous for its mouth-watering, unique tasting Hantam lamb. There are plenty of food stalls and entertainment for the whole family. This is the highlight of the meat lover’s calendar!
Tankwa Camino
Die Ou Lady guest house is perfectly situated to offer accommodation to the participants of the Tankwa Camino, a 10 day hike through the Karoo (described as a modern day “Great Trek”), as it is conveniently situated right opposite the Tankwa Camino starting point.
AfrikaBurn
AfrikaBurn is an annual festival that takes place in the arid semi-desert of the Tankwa Karoo between April and May. Participants showcase their creativity through their creations of elaborate and outrageous costumes, magnificent artworks, mutant vehicles, theme camps, music and performance.
Calvinia Colour Run
Don’t miss out on this fun and exciting event taking place every year around Feb/March in the town of Calvinia! The Calvinia Colour Run is a fund raising event in support of the local school, Kleine Bende. Contact us or visit the Kleine Bende Facebook page for more information.
